Things To do This Summer In Houston Texas

Enjoy Budget Friendly activities and sights this summer in Houston

Summer is here and Houston has plenty of outdoor places to enjoy it.  If you live in Houston, or if you are visiting from out of town, there are some many unique opportunities you can explore to enjoy the outdoors.

Here are some things you can do in Houston, and many of them are FREE.



Miller Outdoor Theater

Enjoy great performances  like Under The Stars, The Houston Symphony, ballet, dance, film and more.  Get your free ticket the day of the performance, or  bring your blanket, your picnic, relax and watch the show from the hill.  

The outdoor theater is inside the Herman Park.

Market Square Park

Market Square Park Houston TexasThe Market Square Park is nestled in the Historic District, located  in the original City Hall.  The purpose of this site is to provide entertainment, dining, art and green space. The most important highlight of the Historic Market Square is its effort to conserve the free art exhibition. 

Restaurants and bars border the park. 

Free Museum Day

The Houston Museum  District  offers free admission every Thursday to several Museums:  the Children’s, Fine Arts and Houston Museum of Science, to name a few.  Take advantage and discover the Museum District for Free.

Houston Waterfall Park

Houston Waterfall Park Houston TexasThis is the site most photographed in Houston. Located in the heart of the Galleria area, the 64 foot semi circular fountain, recirculates 11,000 gallons of water per minute.  It’s surrounded by 186 oak trees and it is one of the community centerpiece in Uptown Houston.  It’s the perfect spot to stay cool in the summer months and it has been the perfect place for photography.

Sam Houston Boat Tour

Sam Houston Boat Tour Houston TexasEmbark in a 90 minute Free tour in the Ship Channel. The Sam Houston has been operating as Port Houston’s public tour vessel since its inaugural voyage on July 30, 1958. Visitors will enjoy passing views of international cargo vessels and operations at the port’s Turning Basin Terminal.


Watch The Sunset At "Twilight Epiphany" Skyspace

The James Turrell's "Twilight Epiphany" Skyspace is located in the Rice University campus.  Escape to catch the beautiful Texas sunrise and the sunset, a true work of art.  The grass full pyramid illuminates and changes colors as the light reflects in the structure. This is a free event so take advantage of this opportunity.


The Menil Collection Houston Texas

The Menil Collection opened to the public in June 1987 as the primary repository of John and Dominique de Menil’s private collection. One of the most significant of the twentieth century, the collection consists of nearly 15,000 works dating from the Paleolithic era to the present day.  Making art accessible is vital to the Menil’s mission, so no admission is charged and all public programs are free.

Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark  

Lee and Jamail SkateparkDesigned by the  skatepark firm Gridline, this state-of-the-art, public 30,000 square-foot in-ground skate park is the first world-class, in-ground skatepark in our region.  The park has areas for skaters of all levels, from the seasoned pro to the beginner – skaters can work on their kick flip, ollie, fake big spin...or simply learn to stay balanced. An introductory class designed to teach participants on the proper technique of skateboarding and to enhance their overall experience at the skatepark.

Sam Houston Forest - Double Lake Recreation Area

Double Lake Sam Houston Forest Houston TexasDouble Lake is located in the Sam Houston Park  North of Houston.   This lake is very peaceful! It has camping sides with picnic table and bar-b-q pits.  Lots of hike / (mountain) bike trails., clean bathrooms (with showers), a lodge, picnic tables, kayaking and a dedicated swim area.
